February 13, 2010MORE: Check out the latest RivalsHigh Top 100 boys basketball rankings
After a day when off-the-court hearings and name calling represented all that can be wrong about high school sports, Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill and Elizabeth (N.J.) St. Patrick put on a show they reminded everyone of all that is right.
In a thrilling end-to-end back-and-forth battle, Oak Hill, No. 10 in the latest RivalsHigh Top 100 boys basketball rankings, outlasted No. 11 St. Patrick, 79-78, at Kean University in Union. N.J.
The defeat marked the end of a tough day for St. Patrick. That afternoon, it was banned from playing in the state tournament (read story here).
The game was decided at the foul line.
Oak Hill's Doron Lamb had one of two from the line with 9.4 seconds remaining to give Oak Hill its one-point lead; St. Patrick's Derrick Gordon missed a pair with 0.4 seconds left that could have tied it or sent it into overtime.
The Star-Ledger, on its Web site, nj.com, described it as a game played above the rim ... way above the rim (read its coverage) here.
That's no surprise, considering the talent on the court.
Oak Hill took a 37-34 lead at halftime behind 13 from Howard, then scored the first four points of the third quarter to open up a seven-poitn lead.
St. Patrick came roaring back, using a 9-0 run to take the lead. Gilchrist had 15 points by himself in the third, which ended with Oak Hill up 62-60.
Oak Hill held off St. Patrick for much of the fourth quarter until Gordon tied the game at 78 with a foul shot with 54 seconds remaining.
