Five-star quarterback Gunner Kiel, the top-ranked pro-style quarterback in the country, is expected to enroll at Notre Dame on Tuesday, officially ending one of the more bizarre recruiting tales in recent history.
Now, according to IrishIllustrated.com, the leader for coverage of Notre Dame sports and football recruiting, Kiel is coming to South Bend.
Kiel has not responded publicly for comment on his recruitment, but he is expected to be on a release from the school Tuesday afternoon, when it announces its second-semester early enrollees and transfers.
Verbal commitments to colleges are non-binding until an athlete signs an official National Letter of Intent on National Signing Day, which falls on Feb. 1 this year. However, if Kiel enrolls early as reported, he is locked into Notre Dame.
Kiel - and other five-stars - have been flipping schools at a high rate this winter.
Kiel's wavering among three schools doesn't surprise Mike Farrell, the Rivals.com national football recruiting analyst. He's seen this trend pick up during his more than a decade of covering recruiting.
"It's the nature of the game these days," he said. "Over the last few years we've seen so many five-stars flip it has become almost commonplace. The bigger the name, the more pressure they get from schools to flip."
