Trail of Talent: What Led to McGee Becoming a Sooner
With more and more Sooner fans wanting to know more about the players that will soon take to Owen Field there is always an element of bewilderment for some when a young high school prospect pledges his future to the Sooners with a verbal commitment.
'Who is this kid, is he a big deal?'
For long-time SoonerScoop.com readers the terms 'star ranking', 'Rivals100' or 'early offers' are accepted parts of the vernacular. For those just acquainting themselves with the recruiting chaos of Rivals.com and, in particular, SoonerScoop.com we offer you 'Trail of Talent' a brief guide to give you an idea just what Oklahoma's most recent commitment means to the Sooner coaches and program.
SoonerScoop.com first got a look at Wednesday night's commitment John Michael McGee by complete and total accident. Now anytime one ventures into East Texas the possibility of finding a new recruiting name to remember is prevalent but from the very start it was pretty clear that McGee wasn't just 'another name'.
That night the 6-foot-3, 260-pound prospect showed off great footwork and the balance that would earn him the ever-popular recruiting title, 'a dancing bear'. However it wasn't until the next summer that Sooner fans truly realized that McGee was going to be a part of Oklahoma's recruiting efforts for the foreseeable future.
However it was the spring of his junior year when it was made clear that Oklahoma's interest in him was very legitimate.
"(Oklahoma) was really the only college that had brought like two scouts down to my school and watched me practice. Coach (Josh) Heupel came and coach (James) Patton came down a little later on," McGee said. "It kind of raised my interest in them."
It was that next summer that McGee, who had grown up a Texas fan, would realize his interest in Oklahoma was equal to their interest in him. McGee showed up in Norman for the same six-day session that included current Sooner commitments Ty Darlington and Sterling Shepard.
