Woodbury talks decision
Adam Woodbury was planning on a making his decision before the start of his senior season in November. But, the 7-footer says it just felt right so why wait and committed to be a Hawkeye next fall. He talks about his decision to pick the Hawkeyes, what Coach McCaffery's reaction was to the good news, and much more.
Q: What was it like tonight to finally make this decision and pick the Hawkeyes?
WOODBURY: It was one of the more exciting times of my life. I am really happy with my decision and I can't wait to get there with Mike Gesell and get Carver rocking again.
Q: What was Coach McCaffery's reaction when you told him you were coming?
WOODBURY: He was very excited. He said he couldn't wait to get me on campus this weekend for my official visit and then again next fall when I get to Iowa.
Q: You grew up a Hawkeye fan. You watched Iowa Basketball your whole life. You want to take on helping rebuild this program.
WOODBURY: I really do. I grew up a Hawkeye fan and I think we can make this happen. We have a lot of talent already on the team and more talent coming in with me. With our coaches and a little luck and hard work, we can turn the program around.
Q: Talk about Coach McCaffery's recruiting approach with you.
WOODBURY: He was great. It was real evident that he wanted me to come to Iowa from the very start. He's a great guy and I am very excited for him to be my coach. I can't say enough good things about Coach McCaffery and the rest of the coaches, like Coach Francis and Coach Speraw. I can't wait to get down there and start training and working with the coaches.
Q: Did having Mike Gesell coming to Iowa help the Hawkeyes?
WOODBURY: He was in my ear, but I wasn't going to base it on one person. I needed to do my own thing, but having him there didn't hurt at all. Mike's a great friend and a great person and I am excited to be with him the next four years.
Q: Coach McCaffery basically followed your AAU team everywhere the last two summers. Did the work he put in there help make a difference?
WOODBURY: I know that coming to just about every game for two years didn't hurt at all. He really worked hard on recruiting me and my teammates and I appreciated it.
Q: You made this decision a little sooner than you thought you might. Did you just feel like this was the right time?
WOODBURY: I just felt like Iowa was the right place for me. I felt great about Coach McCaffery's system and how I would fit into it.
Q: You are taking your official visit to Iowa this weekend. Do you think it will feel different now that you are on board?
WOODBURY: I am looking forward to having a great time this weekend and I can't wait to get there. Mike Gesell is coming and I will get to meet one of the other commits as well. It's going to be great to spend time with the coaches and the players this weekend.
Q: You come from a big Hawkeye fan family. How excited were they about your decision?
WOODBURY: It's really great that they can come down and watch any game that they want in person. They were great through the whole process and really let me make my own decision. I know they couldn't be happier with my decision.
