Boy, was revenge sweet for Philadelphia (Pa.) Neumann-Goretti on Friday night.
The No. 3 Saints, who were upset in the same state quarterfinal round last season by the same Radnor (Pa.) Archbishop Carroll team, made absolutely certain that the upset wouldn't have a chance at a sequel.
In a dominating performance, Neumann-Goretti blew past Carroll, 53-38, to advance to the Class AAA state semifinals Tuesday where it will play Wrightsville (Pa.) Eastern York, a 57-43 winner over Clarks Summit (Pa.) Abington Heights on Friday night.
Goretti was led by Wake Forest commit Tony Chennault with a game-high 20 points.
"I just wanted to do whatever it took for us to win the game," Chennault told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "This was the last game against Carroll in my high school career. I really wanted to finish with a win against them."
Tyreek Duren, a LaSalle recruit, added 10 points for the Saints.
Ben Mingledough had 17 points in the loss for Carroll. D.J. Irving, the Boston University recruit who recently returned from a hand injury, had nine points.
Both teams got off to a sluggish start, as Goretti clung to a 6-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 22-14 at the break.
Last year, Carroll pulled one of the biggest upsets in the state, knocking off Goretti, 70-65, in the state quarterfinals, en route to a state title.
Hillcrest upsets No. 67 Centennial in semis
PEORIA, Ill. - Guard Eric Gaines scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Country Club Hills (Ill.) Hillcrest to a 49-42 upset over defending Class 3A champion No. 67 Champaign (Ill.) Centennial in a semifinal game at the Peoria Civic Center.
The game saw Centennial (31-2) shoot only 30 percent from the field, as both teams combined to score only 29 points in the first half of Friday's game.
Gaines, a Kent State commit, grabbed seven rebounds, as teammate Julius Brown scored 13 points for the Hawks (30-3).
Guard Rayvonte Rice led Centennial with a game-high 20 points.
Hillcrest will meet Peoria (Ill.) Richwoods in the Class 3A championship game Saturday, while Centennial squares off against Chicago (Ill.) Marshall in the consolation game.
Madison (Wis.) Memorial to play for third state title
MADISON, Wis. - Vander Blue and Junior Lomomba scored seven points each in a 22-0 run to close the first half that carried Madison (Wis.) Memorial to a 68-48 win over Appleton (Wis.) East in a WIAA Division 1 boys basketball state semifinal Friday night.
The win sends Memorial (23-4) into the championship game for the sixth time in the past seven years. The Spartans will be seeking their third title in Saturday's final.
Blue, a Rivals.com five-star and Marquette recruit, finished with 21 points, six rebounds and five assists and Tre' Brunette added 16 points for Memorial, which will face Hartland (Wis.) Arrowhead - a 60-58 winner in thrilling fashion over Milwaukee (Wis.) Marquette - on Saturday.
"We're just a loose group," said Blue, whose team won state titles in '05 and '09 and finished second in '04, '06 and '08. "It's a basketball game, at this point it's the biggest stage, the state tournament, it's about business. But we're still goofy. I couldn't be out here with a straight face all the time, so serious. ... We like to have fun."
The Patriots (22-6) held a 22-17 lead just 50 seconds into the second quarter, but didn't score again before going to the locker room down 17 at 39-22.
