Decision delayed on LeMay incident

A decision involving a possible suspension of Matthews (N.C) Butler star quarterback Christian LeMay might not come for another seven to 10 days.

LeMay, the No. 65-ranked high school football player in the country and a Georgia commitment, faces a possible out-of-school suspension that could last up to 30 days for violating a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools' Code of Conduct rule. The alleged rule violation - which has not been made public - may keep LeMay out of Butler's lineup until the middle of October.

Because of state by-laws regarding suspensions, LeMay may not be able to return until just before the playoffs if he is given the maximum 30-day suspension. North Carolina High School Athletic Association rules stipulate that a player must participate in at least nine separate days of team practice, three of which must be in full pads and include contact, before being allowed to participate in a football contest or scrimmage with outside competition.

LeMay, a 6-foot-2, 200-pounder, was 170-of-241 for 3,296 yards, 44 touchdowns and only two interceptions last season, when he led the Bulldogs to a Class 4AA state title and a No. 12 national ranking in the RivalsHigh 100.

Deana King, who covers North Carolina sports for NCPreps.com and publishes the official "North Carolina Prep Football News" yearbook, thinks Butler could make another long playoff run even without LeMay.

"Butler can still be very successful because they have a lot of talent and a great coaching staff," she said. "They have some depth at quarterback with an outstanding rising junior in Riley Ferguson. But the experience and composure of LeMay would be missed."

Butler was a possible top-10 team nationally in the RivalsHigh preseason rankings, but LeMay's suspension would change things.
