Muhammad not traveling to China with UCLA

Prized No. 1-ranked recruit Shabazz Muhammad will not travel with his UCLA squad this month to China because of an ongoing NCAA eligibility review, the university said in a statement Wednesday evening.

The issue stems from whether or not Muhammad received improper benefits while he was playing for his Dream Vision AAU squad in the summer and fall of 2011.

UCLA declined to comment further on the issue, but did say, "Muhammad, his family and UCLA will continue to work with the NCAA during this process."

The Bruins earned the No. 2-ranked recruiting class this past spring, signing Muhammad, point guard Kyle Anderson, shooting guard Jordan Adams and center Tony Parker.

The four have already run into road blocks, however. Parker has a hamstring injury that has him questionable for the Bruins China trip in two weeks. Anderson has been nursing a thumb injury that required surgery just a few weeks ago. And Adams has been practicing with a broken nose.

Muhammad, on top of his eligibility issues, has been dealing with a high-ankle sprain as well.

The Bruins are set to play a professional team - the Shanghai Sharks - and two university teams during their exhibition week in China.
