Vanderdoes signs with UCLA
Five-star 2013 defensive lineman Eddie Vanderdoes has signed a scholarship agreement with UCLA and will enroll in school this month, he said in a statement Tuesday morning to the Sacramento Bee.
"I would like to thank the University of Notre Dame for lifting the recruiting ban and allowing me to sign an athletic scholarship with UCLA," Vanderdoes' text message read. "Over the past four months, circumstances have changed for me and my family. For very personal reasons, I feel a strong need to remain close to home and be near those who are most important in my life.
"I am honored and humbled that Note Dame thought enough of me as a person and a football player to offer me a scholarship. They have been very gracious to recognize not only how difficult a decision this was, but also how important it was for me to be near my family at this time. I take my commitments seriously, but as circumstances changed, the most important commitment is the one made to family."
While Notre Dame lifted Vanderdoes' recruiting ban, it still has yet to release him from his initial National Letter of Intent, which means if the appeals process doesn't fall in the defensive lineman's favor, he will be forced to sit out the 2013 season and have four years to play three starting in 2014.
According to sources close to Vanderdoes, the process of getting out of his NLI has been going on for nearly two months, and could go all the way into "late june" or "mid-July," one source said.
If Notre Dame does in fact release Vanderdoes, he'll be eligible to play immediately at UCLA and have five years to play four.
Regardless of how long he'll spend in Westwood, UCLA is getting a great football player nonetheless. At 6 feet 3, 310 pounds, Vanderdoes has the agility, athleticism and pass-rushing ability to play in any of UCLA's front three spots.
He was ranked the No. 21 prospect in the nation and the No. 2 defensive lineman overall by Rivals.com in 2013.
