Free Preview: Incoming Frosh Robert Chai

In the spirit of the fast approaching football season BruinBlitz will interview players of the incoming class of freshmen. We will try to figure out who is going to redshirt and who is going to see action a true freshman.
The sad news of career ending injuries for two outstanding football players John Ream (6-4, 288), a third-year sophomore center from Las Vegas, NV, and Collin Barker (6-8, 303), a second-year freshman offensive guard from Wortham, TX, means that a freshman or two may have to be counted on for depth.

With that in mind our first call was to Robert Chai (6-3, 280, 5.3) from Newport Beach (Calif.) Newport Harbor. Chai has his bench press up to 330 pounds and has gained ten pounds since his senior season.
Chai was selected to participate in the North-South Shrine game played last Saturday and according to our sources at the game Chai looked solid and played well.
Chai will report with the other freshman to summer camp on August 12th. “I think I’m going to redshirt so I can get bigger, quicker and stronger,” Chai said. “But if they need me I will be ready for the challenge. I’m being projected as a center or guard.”
Why did Chai select UCLA?
“I chose UCLA because it’s a real good school, it’s close to home and I like their tradition.”
Just a reminder for those who forgot, Chai chose UCLA over offers from Colorado, Cal and Washington State.
The following is an excerpt from our review on the incoming Bruin freshman class:
OL Robert Chai (6-4, 274, 5.3) from Newport Beach (Calif.) Newport Harbor is a two-time All-CIF, All-County and All-League selection. Robert is very aggressive on the gridiron and has a take no prisoners attitude. Though Robert played left tackle on the high school level, Robert projects as a guard or center for the Bruins.
