Free Report: Kevin Brown Getting Ready

The Bruin Nation rejoiced last February when four-star defensive lineman/offensive lineman Kevin Brown (6-0, 285, 5.0) from Long Beach (Calif.) Poly finally sent his LOI after the February5th signing day. It was really touch and go for Brown as at that time he was vacillating between UCLA and Florida State. All’s well that ends well because Brown is 110% Bruin and is getting ready to roll.

Brown’s stock as a defensive player received a huge boost in the arm with his fantastic performance against Florida in the Cal/Florida All-Star game last January.

Due to minor injuries during Brown’s senior season he played mostly on the offensive side of the ball and was considered a sure-fire offensive guard or center on the collegiate level.

After his stellar performance against the best offensive line prospects the state of Florida had to offer, it became apparent that Brown could play on the defensive line and that is where he’s going to start his Bruin career.

Brown recently participated in the recent Shrine All-Star game where he played on the offensive side of the ball and was dominating.

“I wanted to play defense,” Brown said. “But I didn’t get the opportunity.”

Brown will get an opportunity to play some defense in a couple weeks when UCLA opens pre-season camp on August 12th.

“I have been working out every day to get ready for camp,” Brown said. “Coach Doc (Kreis) is working us hard.”

“Our team has bunch of 6-foot-8 linemen,” Brown said. “I’m not afraid of them, but I’m afraid of Doc.”

“I expect to contribute this season,” Brown said. “I’m working hard so if I’m called upon I will be ready.”

“I talked to (defensive line) Coach (Don) Johnson my number which is 92,” Brown said. “I want to change it to seven which is my basketball number. They wouldn’t let me have number seven in football because I played offense a lot.”

“Junior (Lemau’u) was given number one and let me tell you he’s in shape,” Brown said. “Junior is ready to contribute as a freshman, too.”

“It is a wonderful feeling to be a Bruin,” Brown said. “There’s no better feeling in the world.”

Brown played primarily on the offensive side of the ball as a senior because he was nursing a high ankle strain. He only played defense on third down situations his senior season still, Brown racked up 20 tackles (most of them were for loss), 10 ½ sacks and three caused fumbles.

On offense, Brown was pure power and domination accounting for 113 pancake blocks. Football fans were able to see what he could really do on defense in the Ca/Florida all-star game. It was the first time he was healthy all year and he dominated on the defensive side of the ball. The versatile Brown could make an impact for the Bruins on either side of the ball.
