As the UCLA football team works in a new starting quarterback next season, it appears it will once again be able to rely on a steady run game.
Ball State transfer running back Carson Steele announced Wednesday via Twitter his commitment to UCLA, as he'll be tasked with likely replacing All-American running back Zach Charbonnet.
Steele, a first-team All-Mid American Conference selection, had the ninth-best rushing total in the FBS with 1,556 yards to go with 14 touchdowns. He had nine games of at least 100 yards rushing, tied for the fifth-most in college football.
Charbonnet, who led the nation with 168 all-purpose yards per game, is widely expected to declare for the NFL draft. He ran for 1,359 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Steele, like Charbonnet, possesses a physical running style. According to Pro Football Focus, only Doak Walker Award winner and Texas running back Bijan Robinson had more missed tackles forced this season.
UCLA topped the nation in average yards before contact and Steele was fourth in the category among individuals.
The Bruins have replenished their depth at the position, with Steele joining Army transfer Anthony Adkins. This season, freshman T.J. Harden ascended from mop-up duty to contributor late in the season, running for a season-high 111 yards and a touchdown in the 37-35 loss to Pittsburgh in the Sun Bowl while Charbonnet was held out.
The Bruins also have a speed threat in redshirt junior Keegan Jones, who served as the primary backup, in addition to converted quarterback Colson Yankoff and the signing of 2023 three-star athlete Isaiah Carlson.
Steele, who has two years of eligibility remaining, is the ninth player — and second this week — to transfer to Westwood this offseason.
UCLA also got a commitment Monday from Montana State transfer placekicker Blake Glessner, who also has two years of eligibility remaining.
Glessner is expected to immediately compete for the starting job left behind by Nicholas Barr-Mira, who doubled as the Bruins’ punter. Barr-Mira is one of seven UCLA players who have decided to transfer since the end of the regular season.
As a sophomore last season, Glessner converted 24 of 30 field goals with a long of 51 yards.
Left tackle declares for the draft
The depth of UCLA’s offensive line took a hit Wednesday with left tackle Raiqwon O’Neal announcing his decision to declare for the NFL draft.
O’Neal, a transfer from Rutgers, spent one season in Westwood. As a redshirt junior, he helped the Bruins average better than 200 yards rushing for a third consecutive season as part of a unit that was a semifinalist for the Joe Moore Award.
He joins right guard Jon Gaines in his decision to turn pro, while left guard Atonio Mafi exhausted his eligibility. Center Duke Clemens and right tackle Garrett DiGiorgio are the lone returners to the offensive line, which finds itself restocking the position for a second consecutive offseason.
In the transfer portal last month, UCLA received a commitment from former Purdue left guard Spencer Holstege.
Two Bruins veterans say their goodbyes
Starting safeties Stephan Blaylock and Mo Osling were out of eligibility, so returning to UCLA wasn't an option, but both said their formal goodbyes on Twitter.
Blaylock set a school record with 55 games played and made 43 straight starts to close out his UCLA career. He finished third on the team this season with 60 tackles, including four tackles for loss, two sacks and an interception
Osling was second on the Bruins with 89 tackles and added three pass breakups.
