PASADENA — Zach Charbonnet’s run of terror on opposing Pac-12 defenses continued Saturday night.

The UCLA running back matched his career-high with 198 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns to lead the No. 12-ranked Bruins to a 38-13 win over Stanford at the Rose Bowl.

Charbonnet also had team-highs of 5 catches for 61 yards in an all-around performance.

UCLA (7-1, 4-1) bounced back from its first loss of the season and picked up its first home win over Stanford since 2008.

Stanford (3-5, 1-5), which came in with the nation’s 19th-worst defense against the run (187.6 yards), allowed 324 yards on the ground.

The Bruins opened up a 24-3 lead past the midway point of the second quarter and never looked back

More than midway through the opening quarter, Bruins middle linebacker Darius Muasau intercepted Cardinal quarterback Tanner McKee in UCLA territory. After the game, Muasau said it was a play he had anticipated while watching film on the bus ride to the stadium.

On the next play, Charbonnet cashed in for a 23-yard touchdown run to extend the Bruins’ lead to 14-3.

It was part of a string of 24 consecutive points before Stanford kicker Joshua Karty made a 49-yard field goal late in the half to cut the deficit to 24-6 going into the locker room.

Charbonnet continued to do what he’s done since transferring from Michigan prior to last season, running over and through would-be tacklers and making others miss. On one particular first-half run, Charbonnet swatted away one defender and kept barreling up the middle.

Through five league games, Charbonnet is now averaging 155 yards per game with 9 rushing touchdowns.

Muasau tied fellow linebacker JonJon Vaughns with a team-high 6 tackles, but the Hawaii transfer’s interception helped set the tone.

Stanford had just 95 total first-half yards before finishing with 270 yards, as the UCLA defense bounced back from allowing a season-worst 545 yards at Oregon.

The defense also got it done without the presence of coordinator Bill McGovern, who stayed home with an illness. Clancy Pendergast, an analyst on the staff, took McGovern’s spot in the coaches’ box but the play-calling was “a collaborative effort,” according to a first-quarter update from UCLA.

Just pick between breathtaking third-quarter plays from Charbonnet. There is no wrong answer.

Midway through the third, Charbonnet caught a screen pass to the right and dodged four Stanford defenders, breaking two tackles, before hurdling safety Kendall Williamson’s diving attempt at the end of a 21-yard completion.

Then, with 3 seconds left in the quarter, Charbonnet bullied his way up the middle, breaking three more tackles, and dashing for a 37-yard touchdown to push the lead to 31-6.

The Bruins kept the plan simple and handled business against a team that lacked resistance against the run.

Dorian Thompson-Robinson took his shots downfield when he had opportunities — and he just missed receiver Jake Bobo’s outstretched arms over the top of the defense early in the game — but otherwise the plan was all about establishing the run from the start. Charbonnet had 115 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns going into the break.

Defensively, the pass rush responded to last week’s rough performance with 4 sacks -- from Laiatu Latu, Bo Calvert, Stephan Blaylock and Gary Smith III -- and the unit forced one turnover. The Bruins extended the Cardinal’s touchdown drought to 10 quarters before a late fourth-quarter score, taking advantage of a team down two running backs and its top receiver.
