The UCLA Bruins appear to have avoided a catastrophe with Josh Rosen's myriad of injuries.
While Jim Mora was coy about the sophomore's ailments, neither the leg or arm he injured against Arizona State on Saturday night seem to be season-threatening.
"He's roughed up a little bit," Mora said of Rosen. "Hopefully he'll be OK to go this week. He's a tough kid. I was impressed by the way he came back in and fought through some obvious pain and delivered a pretty good performance."
Rosen appeared to injure his hip early in the loss to the Sun Devils, missing several series before ultimately fighting through the pain to play most of the second half. Late in the game, however, he took a blow to his arm after landing awkwardly on it and couldn't finish the game.
Mora wouldn't reveal the extent of Rosen's injuries, only saying the QB suffered "upper and lower body" injuries. Both he and center Scott Quessenberry, though, appear to have hope that Rosen will not miss the Washington State tilt this weekend.
"That's what I've heard, (that he's) optimistic he can play this weekend," Quessenberry said. "But I'm not 100 percent sure. We broke down the film this morning. I didn’t really get a chance to talk to him in-depth, but we'll see going forward."
Mora said if Rosen can't practice on Tuesday and Wednesday, Mike Fafaul, who was just 3-for-11 with two interceptions in Rosen's stead on Saturday night, would earn the lion's share of reps.
Still, Mora is hopeful it won't get to the point where Fafaul is needed again this weekend.
"(Rosen) is a tough kid, he's competitive, he has a will to get back in there," Mora said. "He doesn’t want to let anyone down. He loves to compete, so I'd be surprised if he doesn't do everything he can to get back on the field Saturday."
Miller's injury not season-ending
After getting rolled up on in UCLA's win over Arizona earlier this month, starting right tackle Kolton Miller was spotted on crutches and later in a cast. Mora said Monday, though, that UCLA expects to see the big O-lineman on the field again eventually this season.
"You'll see him again this season," Mora said. "It's just a matter of when. If it was season-ending, I'd tell you. It's not."
Andre James has filled in for Miller since his departure. Mora said the redshirt freshman tackle "did a nice job" subbing for Miller against ASU.
Short shots
-Another week, another mysterious benching for a UCLA player with no explanation of why from Mora. Asked why running back Bolu Olorunfunmi didn't play during the ASU game in the post-game news conference, Mora didn't offer much. Asked again Monday if he expects to have his running back stable at full strength this weekend, Mora shrugged off the question again: "I would hope so. It's early to tell, but hopefully we'll be at full strength."
-Mora said Monday it's a "continual quest" for UCLA to try to fix its "sub-standard" running game. The Bruins are averaging less than 3 yards per carry this season.
